Sometimes. The new product must permit the proposed installation, and the existing floor must be stable, clean, dry, sufficiently flat or smooth, compatible with the installation system, and acceptable for height, doors, stairs, fixed cabinets, and transitions. Carpet and unstable flooring are normally removed.
The product instructions come first
Floating, glue-down, fastened, and tiled floors do not use the same rules. Approval to install over one surface does not mean approval over every old floor or every number of historical layers.
When an existing hard surface may remain
A stable tile, sheet material, wood floor, or another approved hard surface may sometimes remain when it is well bonded, flat, clean, dry, structurally suitable, and compatible with the new system. Grout joints, embossing, movement, or old coatings may still need preparation.
Reasons to remove the old floor
- The existing material is loose, soft, damaged, contaminated, or uneven.
- The added height creates door, stair, appliance, or transition problems.
- The new adhesive, mortar, or fastener system is not approved over it.
- Moisture or damage below the old floor needs inspection.
- Several old layers make the assembly uncertain.
Height changes affect more than doorways
Added thickness can affect exterior thresholds, stair risers, appliance openings, toilets, floor drains, rail posts, baseboards, vents, built-ins, transitions, and floor movement. A thin sample does not show the complete installed assembly.
Older unknown materials require caution
Do not disturb unknown older flooring or adhesive without appropriate assessment. Suspect material, testing, and abatement are separate from ordinary removal or installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can vinyl plank be installed over ceramic tile?
Some products allow it when the tile is stable, flat, clean, dry, and compatible. Grout joints, cracks, movement, height, and transitions still need review.
Can laminate be installed over carpet?
Residential carpet is generally removed because it is not a stable, suitable substrate for ordinary floating laminate systems.
Can tile be installed over tile?
It may be possible with an approved system when existing tile and substrate are properly bonded, flat, clean, stable, and acceptable for height.
