From Request to Walkthrough

Flooring Installation Process

See how material responsibility, measurement, removal, subfloor preparation, installation, finishing, cleanup, and the final walkthrough fit into one flooring project.

A good flooring process prevents material purchasing, removal, preparation, installation, and finishing from becoming disconnected decisions. The exact sequence varies by flooring system, but responsibilities should be settled before the installation date.

Initial project request

Share the flooring type, rooms, existing surface, approximate size, project postal code, timing, and whether the new material has already been purchased.

Material and scope discussion

Confirm whether the customer already owns the flooring, plans to purchase it independently, or needs supply and installation. Identify available labels, instructions, accessories, and product questions.

Measurement and site assessment

Measure relevant areas and review room shape, substrate, visible flatness, stairs, doors, closets, fixed cabinetry, vents, transitions, baseboards, access, and existing material.

Written installation scope

Separate material, delivery, removal, disposal, preparation, installation, trim, transitions, stairs, electrical coordination, painting, customer responsibilities, exclusions, and the process for unexpected conditions.

Material and site preparation

Confirm delivery, product storage or acclimation instructions, room access, furniture, appliances, fragile items, occupants, pets, pathways, parking, cutting location, and surface protection.

Removal and subfloor preparation

Remove agreed materials, expose the substrate, complete included cleaning, fastening, scraping, grinding, patching, levelling, or underlayment work, and report conditions outside the written scope.

Installation and finishing

Install the approved flooring system and complete the agreed transitions, baseboards, shoe moulding, nosing, vents, grout, sealant, or other finishing details.

Cleanup and walkthrough

Review installed areas, visible finishing, access or cure requirements, care information, remaining material, product records, and any documented follow-up items.

Before the Installation Date

Details that should not wait until the crew arrives.

Last-minute uncertainty around furniture, appliances, product quantity, underlayment, transitions, stairs, floor height, or electrical inspection can interrupt the schedule.
