A heated tile floor combines an electrical heating system with a tile assembly. In Ontario, hired electrical work must be completed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and ESA guidance requires notification and inspection for electric floor-heating components before they are covered. The electrical and flooring scopes should be coordinated before installation begins.
Define the roles before material is purchased
The project may involve a flooring installer, tile installer, Licensed Electrical Contractor, general contractor, homeowner, heating-system supplier, and inspector. The written scope should identify who selects the system, confirms circuit capacity, installs heating components, places the sensor, files notification, requests inspection, performs testing, covers the system, sets tile, connects controls, and provides records.
Plan heated and unheated zones
Room square footage is not heating coverage. Fixed cabinets, toilets, tubs, vanities, floor penetrations, required clearances, sensor position, doors, room shape, and the system’s spacing instructions affect the layout.
Test and inspect before covering
ESA’s published in-floor heating guidance says the electrical heating components require notification and inspection before cables or pads are covered. System resistance or other required tests and documentation should be completed at the specified stages so damage can be identified before it disappears below mortar or levelling material.

Protect the system during tile work
Heating cable, mat, membrane, cold leads, sensor, and connections must be protected from cuts, crushing, displacement, incompatible fasteners, and damage during covering and tile installation. The selected mortar, membrane, tile, movement, thickness, and product instructions must form an approved assembly.
Allow the tile assembly to cure
The system should not be energized simply because the grout looks dry. Mortar, grout, levelling material, heating-system instructions, tile assembly, and environmental conditions determine when commissioning can occur.
